The Department of Potosí (in southwestern Bolivia) is home to the spectacular Salt Flat of Uyuni, which is one of the most interesting natural attractions in Bolivia. It spans 10,582 square kilometers and is the world's largest salt flat, at an altitude of 3,650 meters above sea level.
Approximately 40,000 years ago, the area occupied by the Salt Flat of Uyuni was part of Lake Minchin, a huge prehistoric lake. When this lake dried up, two important lakes, Uru Uru and Popó, were left behind, as well as two very large salt deserts: the Sale Flat of Coipasa and the larger Salt Flat of Uyuni, which is 25 times larger than Bonneville Salt Flat in the United States.
